Zasięg występowania edytuj

Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Ameryce Północnej i Eurazji[9].

Morfologia edytuj

Długość ciała 53–94 cm, rozpiętość skrzydeł 115–185 cm; masa ciała 1224–4560 g (samce są większe i cięższe od samic)[10].

Systematyka edytuj

Rodzaj zdefiniował w 1760 roku francuski zoolog Mathurin Jacques Brisson w publikacji własnego autorstwa poświęconej ornitologii[1]. Gatunkiem typowym jest (oznaczenie monotypowe) gęgawa (A. anser).

Etymologia edytuj

  • Anser: łac. anser, anseris ‘gęś’[11].
  • Sarcopogon: autor nie wyjaśnił etymologii; gr. σαρξ sarx, σαρκος sarkos ‘ciało’; πωγων pōgōn, πωγωνος pōgōnos ‘zarost’[12].
  • Chen: gr. χην khēn, χηνος khēnos ‘gęś’[13]. Gatunek typowy (oznaczenie monotypowe): Anser hyperboreus Pallas, 1769 (= Anas caerulescens Linnaeus, 1758).
  • Cygnopsis: rodzaj Cygnus Bechstein, 1803 (łabędź); gr. οψις opsis ‘wygląd’[14]. Gatunek typowy: Brandt wymienił dwa gatunki – Anser cygnoid Linnaeus, 1758 i Anser canadensis Linnaeus, 1758 – z których gatunkiem typowym jest (późniejsze oznaczenie) Anas Cygnoid Linnaeus, 1758[15].
  • Eulabeia: gr. ευλαβης eulabēs ‘ostrożny, dyskretny’, od ευ eu ‘dobry’; λαβειν labein ‘wziąć’[16]. Gatunek typowy (oryginalne oznaczenie): Anas indica Latham, 1790.
  • Chionochen: gr. χιων khiōn, χιονος khionos ‘śnieg’; χην khēn, χηνος khēnos ‘gęś’[17]. Gatunek typowy (oryginalne oznaczenie): Anser hyperboreus Pallas, 1769 (= Anas caerulescens Linnaeus, 1758).
  • Marilochen: gr. μαριλη marilē ‘pył węglowy, węgiel drzewny’; χην khēn, χηνος khēnos ‘gęś’[18]. Gatunek typowy (oryginalne oznaczenie): Anser brevirostris Thienemann, 1838 (= Anas erythropus Linnaeus, 1758).
  • Exanthemops: gr. εξανθημα exanthēma ‘pryszcz, krosta’, od εξανθεω exantheō ‘wybuchnąć’; ωψ ōps, ωπος ōpos ‘twarz’[19]. Gatunek typowy (oznaczenie monotypowe): Anser rossii Cassin, 1861.
  • Philacte: gr. φιλος philos ‘kochający’, od φιλεω phileō ‘kochać’; ακτη aktē ‘wybrzeże’[20]. Gatunek typowy (oznaczenie monotypowe): Anas canagicus Sewastianoff, 1802.
  • Melanonyx: gr. μελας melas, μελανος melanos ‘czarny’; ονυξ onux, ονυχος onukhos ‘pazur’[21]. Gatunek typowy (oznaczenie monotypowe): Anas segetum J.F. Gmelin, 1789.
