Nazwa grupy powstała od imienia mitycznego potwora Chimera[5][6]. Do końca 2011 w grupie występował gitarzyści Rob Arnold i Matt DeVries[7]. Kolejni członkowie opuścili zespół na początku września 2014[8][9]. Tuż po tym, założyciel i jedyny stały członek zespołu od początku istnienia, wokalista Mark Hunter wydał oświadczenie o zakończeniu działalności grupy Chimaira[10].
