Gatunek po raz pierwszy opisany naukowo przez J. P. Müllera w 1838 roku pod nazwą Semnopithecus rubicundus[4]. Jako miejsce typowe autor wskazał górę Sekumbang w południowym Kalimantan w Indonezji[4].

Wyróżniono pięć podgatunków P. rubicunda[5][3]:
- P. rubicunda carimatae – langur karimatański (status IUCN: DD)[6]
- P. rubicunda arimatae – langur samotny (status IUCN: DD)[7]
- P. rubicunda chrysea – langur rdzawy (status IUCN: LC)[8]
- P. rubicunda rubicunda – langur kasztanowy (status IUCN: LC)[9]
- P. rubicunda rubida – langur czerwonawy (status IUCN: LC)[10]
