The aggregated material on the cells may be an adaptation to vancomycin, but the distribution suggests not. The background filter is also covered with aggregates. These are very sparse to the upper right of the cells, while the aggregates on the cells appear quite clearly to be concentrated on the side away from this "shadow" effect.
