Wikipedia jest encyklopedią sieciową tworzoną w otwartym gronie współpracowników, czyli w grupie ochotników i grup wolontariuszy, wspólnie zbierających ludzką wiedzę. Przyjęte założenia pozwalają każdej osobie dysponującej połączeniem z Internetem na modyfikowanie treści Wikipedii. Należy jednak zakładać, że zamieszczone w projekcie treści nie zostały przejrzane przez osoby kompetentne w poszczególnych dziedzinach wiedzy i że mogą one nie stanowić kompletnej, dokładnej czy rzetelnej informacji.
Nie oznacza to, że w Wikipedii nie da się znaleźć wartościowych i dokładnych informacji – w wielu przypadkach Wikipedia zamieszcza materiały dobrej jakości.
