Rozgrywany jest [[system pucharowy|systemem pucharowym]] (przegrywający odpada). Pierwsze rozgrywki odbyły się w roku 1911. Później wielokrotnie dokonywano zmian w rozgrywkach, żeby w końcu ustalić obecną formę. Najwięcej triumfów w tym turnieju na swoim koncie ma [[SL Benfica|Benfica Lizbona]], która po Puchar Portugalii sięgała 29 krotnie. 20 razy zdobyło puchar [[FC Porto]], a 19 [[Sporting CP|Sporting Lizbona]].
