Leccinum vulpinum Watling

Leccinum vulpinum Watling, Boletaceae, Agaricales. This is a common kind in this location and it is far away from aspen, sometimes between pine and birch, usually nearby pine-trees. It was studied when abundant (bruising and age discolouring – lots of photos). (Local name: Красноголовик, «Подосиновик», Красноголовик сосновый) Cap: 6-18cm convex up to broadly convex; surface fine velvety as old skin, minor smooth in wet weather; orange-red and orange (young), pale brownish-orange or pale red-orange (adult) up to dull orange-yellow or brownish-yellow and sometimes with a net of cracks (old and drying up). Age discolouring is common, especially with sun light, so there are red spots and strips under branches and leaves. Odour is weak and pleasant. Flesh is white and the older the softer and darker; after damage it bruising pink or light red (young), purplish-pink (adult), purplish-grey or grey (old and drying up); the drier weather, the slower bruising. Tubes: attached (sometimes almost free when very old, cause a ring depression under a cap around stalk), colour from whitish up to brownish-white or very light dull brown, sometimes with irregular dull reddish-brown spots (old). Stalk: 6-16cm long, 1.5-3cm thick and enlarged down; whitish with tiny projections, projections colour is pinkish-white then brownish-gray or gray; bruising pink or light red (young), purplish-pink (adult), purplish-grey or grey (old); sometimes the cutting of an old base is light greenish-blue. Habitat: small group nearby pine-trees or their stumps, sometimes between pine and birch wood. Edibility: tasty. Season: June – August.
