English: Roman mis-struck coin; obverse brockage of a struck copper alloy nummus of Constantine II, dating from the period 317-340.
A ‘brockage’ occurs when a coin becomes stuck to one of the coin dies and is not removed before the next coin is struck. The second coin therefore has one normal face (struck against the clear die) and one face which has been struck against the first coin instead of the die. This leads to an inverse image of the first coin instead of the normal image of the die. This particular coin is an obverse brockage, meaning that it has its normal obverse (struck against the normal obverse die) on one face and a concave image of the same obverse (struck against the obverse of the stuck coin) on the other face.
