W czasie II wojny światowej służył w sztabie generała Omara Bradleya. Po wojnie w ukończył Washington State University, gdzie w późniejszy czasie także uczył. W czasie jego pracy naukowej był nagrodzony między innymi doktoratem honoris causa z University of Oxford.
