Zasięg występowania
edytujRodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Kanadzie, Stanach Zjednoczonych i Meksyku[10][11].
Morfologia
edytujDługość ciała (bez ogona) 115–280 mm, długość ogona 50–120 mm; masa ciała 78–400 g; samce są zazwyczaj większe i cięższe od samic[10][12].
Systematyka
edytujRodzaj zdefiniował w 1817 roku francusko-amerykański przyrodnik Constantine Samuel Rafinesque na łamach The American Monthly Magazine and Critical Review[1]. Rafinesque wymienił dwa gatunki – Geomys pinetis Rafinesque, 1817 i Geomys cinerea Rafinesque, 1817 (= Mus bursarius G. Shaw, 1800) – nie wskazując gatunku typowego; w ramach późniejszego oznaczenia w 1836 roku francuski chirurg i zoolog René Lesson na typ nomenklatoryczny wyznaczył goffera południowowschodniego (G. pinetis)[13].
Etymologia
edytuj- Geomys: gr. γεω- geō- ‘ziemny’, od γη gē „ziemia, grunt”; μυς mus, μυός muos ‘mysz’[14].
- Diplostoma: gr. διπλοος diploos ‘podwójny’, od δυο duo ‘dwa’; στομα stoma, στοματος stomatos ‘usta’[15]. Gatunek typowy: Diplostoma fusca Rafinesque, 1817 (= Mus bursarius Shaw, 1800).
- Saccophorus: gr. σακκος sakkos ‘worek’; φερω pherō ‘nosić’[16]. Gatunek typowy: Mus bursarius Shaw, 1800.
- Pseudostoma: gr. ψευδος pseudos ‘fałszywy’; στομα stoma, στοματος stomatos ‘usta’[17]. Gatunek typowy: Mus bursarius Shaw, 1800.
- Ascomys: gr. ασκος askos skóra przerobiona na worek’ (tj. kieszeń); μυς mus, μυός muos ‘mysz’[18]. Gatunek typowy: Ascomys canadensis Lichtenstein, 1825 (= Mus bursarius Shaw, 1800).
- Mamgeomyscus: modyfikacja zaproponowana przez meksykańskiego przyrodnika Alfonso Luisa Herrerę w 1899 roku polegająca na dodaniu do nazwy rodzaju ssaków przedrostka Mam (od Mammalia)[19].
- Nerterogeomys: gr. νερτερος nerteros ‘niżej, poniżej’; rodzaj Geomys Rafinesque, 1817[7]. Gatunek typowy: †Geomys persimilis Hay, 1927.
- Parageomys: gr. παρα para ‘blisko, przy’; rodzaj Geomys Rafinesque, 1817[8]. Gatunek typowy: †Parageomys tobinensis Hibbard, 1944.
