Zasięg występowania
edytujRodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Kolumbii, Wenezueli, na Trynidadzie i Tobago, w Gujanie, Surinamie, Gujanie Francuskiej, Brazylii, Boliwii, Peru i Ekwadorze[3][4][5].
Morfologia
edytujDługość ciała (bez ogona) 150–280 mm, długość ogona 158–242 mm; masa ciała 340–405 g[4][6].
Systematyka
edytujRodzaj zdefiniował w 1978 roku holenderski teriolog Antonius Marie Husson w książce swojego autorstwa o tytule The mammals of Suriname[1]. Na gatunek typowy Husson wyznaczył (oryginalne oznaczenie) makalatę czerwononosą (M. didelphoides).
Etymologia
edytujMakalata: lokalna, surinamska nazwa Maka-alata dla kolczaków[1].
Podział systematyczny
edytujWyróżniany przez niektóre ujęcia systematyczne Makalata obsura[6][3][5] w świetle ostatnich badań stanowi nomen dubium ponieważ okaz typowy zaginął a oryginalny opis jest zbyt niejasny, aby ustalić, do jakiego gatunku należy[7][8][9]; w takim ujęciu do rodzaju należą następujące gatunki[10][2]:
- Makalata macrura (J.A. Wagner, 1842) – makalata długoogonowa
- Makalata didelphoides (Desmarest, 1817) – makalata czerwononosa
